Hosted on November 10th, D&AD Presidents Lecture series presented Vince Frost’s ‘Designing Your Life.’
“Vince Frost is a design tour-de-force. His bold, no-nonsense typographically led designs have been breaking new ground for over 20 years. His work revels in using typographic elements and language as a playground, breaking convention to make a point. Frost brings humour and honesty to every subject he tackles. Further than that, Frost’s design output extends beyond books and reports to progressive brand identities and fearless spatial expressions.”
The talk explored Vince’s principal that everybody can use design thinking to improve their life. His lecture ran through his book (which is impeccably designed) as a starting point to explore how we can all benefit from design. So many gems were shared but it’s Vince’s design manifesto which really stuck with me:
Dig deep by questioning everything.
Don’t be a whinger – the excuser uses external forces to blame others.
Define your goals for a clearer vision.
Have an open mind, avoid familiarity and the usual solutions.
Step outside your comfort zone but know your limits.
TRY AGAIN. FAIL AGAIN. FAIL BETTER.
Design by failure. Don’t give up but don’t repeat the same mistakes – be decisive.
Shadow a star, find a mentor. But don’t fall asleep in his/hers chaise longue.
Yearn to learn.
These all seem pretty straightforward, right? But it’s so refreshing to hear a lead design guy speak in this humble way and how it’s worked both in his life, agency and clients.
I couldn’t recommended the D&AD lecture series enough – incredibly engaging, affordable tickets and a great venue. See here for more details on upcoming events.
